Oppose ALPRs in San Jose

Wed, September 30 at 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

San Jose has hundreds of cameras tracking residents and visitors as we go about our daily lives. These tools of mass surveillance put all of us at risk. Just recently, reports emerged that a police officer broke public trust by using the cameras to track location of a domestic abuse survivor for his cousin, the alleged abuser. At the same time, the police chief assured the public and city council that similar abuses would never occur in San Jose. Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) do not keep us safe – they put us at risk of the repeated documented abuses.

At the September 30 Rules Committee meeting for San Jose City Council, ALPRs will be discussed to decide when to agendize the topic at a future council meeting. As part of one of the chapter’s priority campaigns, SV-DSA is mobilizing to call for cancelation of the city’s contract with Flock, an independent audit of the system, and covering the cameras while the audit is ongoing. We will join a rally outside City Hall at 1 pm and then go inside to the meeting at 2 for public comment. When it comes to our personal data, If you can’t protect it, Don’t collect it!

Send a letter to council with our template here: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/safety-over-surveillance-cover-cameras-and-cancel-the-alpr-contract/
