What is the mission of the Community Safety Working Group?
We work to construct and promote a framework for community safety that proves we do not need police, militaries, or any other imperial force to maintain peace. Under capitalism, the promise of “safety” or “justice” from these institutions comes at the cost of a violent status quo that prefers punishment over protection, serving ruling class interests before all else. Dismantling the American police state requires both opposing the systems that uphold it, and creating practical models of safety rooted in community organizing.
In practice, at our current scale, our work towards this goal typically translates to fighting the influence of fascist institutions in the Bay Area via city council mobilizing, information campaigns, and forming coalitions with like-minded organizations.
