SUMMARY:Labor Movie Night "Partners" Ultra-topical!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday evening\, December 4th at 7 pm\, at the SEIU-521 Hall\, 2302 Zanker Road\, for a screening of “Partners.” This documentary screening couldn’t be more timely\, given that the Starbucks Workers United-led strike wave has reached San José! \nThe full title of the film: “Partners: A Film About How Starbucks Baristas Started a Labor Revolution.” Yes\, this is a Gen-Z led labor revolution! A union struggle breaking new ground in a gig-work dominated industry. \nThis screening will be special in several ways: we will have a SWU strike leader with us\, to discuss and answer questions. We will have baristas and SWU staff joining us from the area\, including Santa Cruz\, where the strikes began in California. And we will be able to build support right there and then\, to support the on-going strikes in San José. \nFood and drink will also be on hand. Make plans to attend\, and help spread the word!

SUMMARY:Pack City Hall for Summerwind Tenant Union
DESCRIPTION:In November\, we advocated to the San Jose Code Enforcement Appeals Board with the tenants at Summerwind Apartments in East San Jose\, who have been in a battle against their landlords due to their poor living conditions\, including issues with pests and mold. \nAt the November meeting\, code enforcement promised action – and updates – but no change occurred for these residents. So\, we’re returning to hold code enforcement to their word. \nJoin us on Thursday\, December 11 at 6:30 pm to support the Summerwind Tenant Union and call for action for the landlords’ code violations. The hearing will take place in the Council Chambers at San Jose City Hall (200 E. Santa Clara Street). Be there and help us show up for tenants’ rights! \nLocation details:\nSan  Jose City Hall\n200 E Santa Clara St.\nSan Jose\, CA 95113 \nMeeting location:\nWe will gather outside of chambers. The meeting will be held in council chambers\, but not through the traditional entrance for council meetings. The entrance will be on the first/ground floor at the back of the rotunda (south side\, think of Santa Clara Street being the “front.”) Follow the hallway and a placard will indicate council chambers. A map exists below with arrows indicating entrance. \nMeeting notes: \n\nTalking points are available here.\nThis item is not on the regular agenda. We will be giving public comment at the end of the meeting (Agenda Item 9)\nGiving public comment: Upon arrival\, fill out a (pink?) card which will be at the front of the room or on the wooden guard in front of the seating area.\n\nParking:\nCity Hall garage will be closed. Park in the Fourth Street garage\, 44 S. Fourth St. and San Fernando\, which offers the first 90 minutes free (the meeting will likely run longer than 90 minutes). Cost: $1.00 every 20 minutes\, $20 max; $5.00 after 6:00 p.m.\, weekdays. Please see photo at bottom of this post for walking directions from garage to chambers. \nTransit:\nLight rail service is available to Santa Clara and First / Second Streets. Bus Lines: 22\, 63\, 64\, 65 \nWe may be able to connect you with carpooling. Please contact us at info@siliconvalleydsa.org. \nAccessibility:\n \n\nThe general seating area is accessed by stairs. We assume additional seating is available in accordance with ADA guidelines.\nThere will be ample room for distancing\, if desired – chambers seat 300+ and less than 50 attendees were present at the 11/13 meeting (~20 of them being with our group).\nIt is not necessary to remain in chambers the full duration of the meeting. Personal breaks can be taken at any time simply by leaving through the entrance. No signin/out etc. is required.\nFood and drink is prohibited in chambers but can be consumed outside. (Water is likely fine).\nClosed captioning is often provided without request.\nThe meeting will take place in English\, however we expect Spanish translators to be available.\n\nAdditional information about the San Jose Appeals Hearing Board is here.
