Justice Book Club
Mon, April 5 at 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Justice Book Club is reading Until We Reckon: Violence, Mass Incarceration, and a Road to Repair by Danielle Sered. This is our 2nd of 3 book club meetings. Note: You do not have to read the book to attend book club and enjoy the discussion.
Until We Reckon explores a prison-deferment program in the Bronx that is victim centered and that has extremely low recidivism. When the causes of violence (shame, isolation from community, inability to meet ones own needs) are removed crime rates drop and communities are repaired.
Let’s change the conversation away from copaganda toward solutions that offer dignity and healing to all concerned.
How does victim centered justice work?
Can Restorative Justice deal with violent crime?
What is an abolitionist approach to violent crime?
We have a copy of Until We Reckon at the DSA office library. You can also reach out to the Justice co-chairs on slack/signal for a PDF of the book. Several copies are also available through the Santa Clara County and San Mateo County library systems.
This 2nd meeting be prepared to discuss chapters 2, 3 and 4 of Until We Reckon Violence, Mass Incarceration, and a Road to Repair.
