Justice Book Club is reading Until We Reckon: Violence, Mass Incarceration, and a Road to Repair by Danielle Sered.
“50% of incarcerated prisoners are imprisoned for violent crime. Our society must create solutions for violent crime, or we will not see abolition in our lifetimes.” – Danielle Sered
How does victim centered justice work?
Can Restorative Justice deal with violent crime?
What is an abolitionist approach to violent crime?
Until We Reckon explores a prison-deferment program in the Bronx that is victim centered and that has extremely low recidivism. When the causes of violence (shame, isolation from community, inability to meet ones own needs) are removed crime rates drop and communities are repaired.
Bookclub will meet bi-weekly on Mondays until we complete the readings. Please join us and invite your friends to join too. Let’s change the conversation away from copaganda toward solutions that offer dignity and healing to all concerned.
Until We Reckon has just come out in paperback. We will have a copy available at the DSA office library in San Jose. You can also reach out to the Justice co-chairs on slack/signal for a PDF of the book. Several copies are also available through the Santa Clara County and San Mateo County library systems.
Come to the first meeting ready to discuss the introduction and Chapter 1. We anticipate it will take 3 bookclub meetings to complete our discussions of Until We Reckon.
