Labor Movie Night: Salt of the Earth
Fri, August 11 at 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
In this hot labor summer, come join SV DSA and SEIU Local 521 for a screening of the blacklisted film Salt of the Earth (1954) and a chance to socialize. The story of the film’s production, complete with FBI surveillance, gun violence and a deportation, deserves to be a movie all on its own.
The film is based on the true story of mostly Mexican-American zinc miners who struck for 15 months to demand better safety, and equal pay and living conditions to their white colleagues. When an injunction stopped the men from picketing, their wives faced down their husbands’ prejudice to step in and keep up the fight. The film stars some of the union zinc miners themselves.
