No War with Iran Study Group

February 1 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join others to discuss the history of Iran. The group will be going through a curriculum developed by the Catalyst Project (https://collectiveliberation.org/no-war-on-iran/) “to counter the disinformation campaign about Iran, educate people about the history and current situation in Iran, and inspire people to oppose US aggression against Iran.”

The readings for this first session are below. Please come with your thoughts on the readings and be prepared to discuss them. Feel free to join even if you were unable to finish the readings. The knowledge in the room will be valuable to everyone.

READINGS

  • Iranian Women’s March against Hijab, March 8th, 1979 (10 minutes):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odmlfa986mk
(A note about this film: there is a long history of liberal Western feminists fixating on the veil as a symbol of Muslim women’s oppression, and seeing Muslim women as people who need to be rescued by their enlightened sisters. This patronizing viewpoint stereotypes Muslim and Arab women, ignores the actual demands of Muslim and Arab feminists, and feeds into the U.S. government’s false claim that waging war on Arab and Muslim countries will emancipate Muslim women. Try to watch this film through the perspective of the women who are speaking and defining their own liberation.)
