On September 15, the California Assembly concluded its fall legislative session without addressing SB562, a single-payer healthcare bill that would have covered all residents of California. We at South Bay DSA have been fighting for that bill since its announcement in March, knocking doors to inform and mobilize our neighbors, tabling at public events, and making ourselves heard at town halls.
Elected California Democrats have stalled single payer for this year, but the momentum is on our side – the side that believes that healthcare is a right. Senator Bernie Sanders unveiled his national-level “Medicare for all” bill on September 13, winning the support of the presidential front-runners in the Senate. That doesn’t mean we can suddenly trust centrists to be on the right side of this issue – but it is a sign that the pressure from the nationwide movement for single payer is working, and it is a sign that we need to redouble our efforts in California.
This will be our first organizing meeting focusing specifically on healthcare. Tentative agenda items:
- Review of California and federal single-payer bills
- Discussion of goals and working group charter
- Developing an outreach plan
- Internally organizing our working group – canvass captains
- Set timeline for working group co-chair election
Let’s get to work! ✊🚑🌹
